Join us

We welcome enthusiastic students from all over the world. There are two ways to join us: through the Double Degree Program (DDP), or by applying directly.

Life in the lab

Progress meetings

Every week, or as needed. Each student reports on their research for 15 to 60 minutes.

Study groups

Right after joining, students take part in two study groups:

  • The NLP 100 Exercise
  • Reading groups on two textbooks: Introduction to Machine Learning for Natural Language Processing, and Foundations of Natural Language Processing
Daily work

Data analysis, annotation, and programming are the core of our research work. Information within the lab is shared on Slack.

Conferences

Students are strongly encouraged to present at domestic and international conferences. See News for recent presentations.

Double Degree Program

If you wish to join us through the Double Degree Program (DDP), please contact us in accordance with the DDP regulations. The procedure in How to apply below does not apply to DDP candidates.

How to apply

This section is for applying directly, which is open only to students aiming for a PhD. If you are applying through the Double Degree Program (DDP), see Double Degree Program above instead.

Timing

If you are considering applying to our laboratory, please contact us (see Where to send it below) well before the application deadline, as we need sufficient time to discuss your research plan. Most students enroll in the autumn semester, so we recommend reaching out no later than the beginning of the previous autumn.

MEXT scholarship

If you hope to receive the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT), the same timing applies. Regarding eligibility, we accept applicants under the following conditions:

  • MEXT Embassy Recommendation route: Applicants recommended through the MEXT Embassy Recommendation route are welcome to apply.
  • Other routes (including MEXT University Recommendation): Applicants are required to submit, along with their application, a recommendation letter from either (a) a researcher who has co-authored a paper with Masatoshi TSUCHIYA, (b) a former MEXT scholarship recipient, or (c) a faculty member at a Japanese university.

Please note that we will not respond to any application through these other routes that does not include such a recommendation letter.

Application letter

Your application letter MUST state the season in which you hope to enroll at Toyohashi University of Technology (e.g. Fall 2027) and MUST include your curriculum vitae (CV). Your application letter MUST clearly explain your research plan.

The plan is strongly expected to relate to one of our previous publications, and must have sufficient depth and scope to support the completion of two journal papers and one international conference paper, which are required for a PhD degree from Toyohashi University of Technology.

If you are not applying for the MEXT scholarship, your application letter MUST also include a plan for financing your studies. Please be aware that we cannot offer you a salary, and you will have to pay tuition fees by yourself.

Master's program and doctoral entry

We do not accept students who intend to enroll only in the Master's program and do not plan to proceed to a PhD.

If you have already completed a Master's degree and wish to enroll in the doctoral program without first studying in our Master's program, please note that this is extremely challenging. Completing the required two journal papers and one international conference paper within a standard doctoral period without the foundation built during a Master's course here is very difficult. We will only consider such applications if your research plan clearly demonstrates how you will realistically achieve this publication requirement.

NLP background

If you have not done graduate work in natural language processing, you will need to demonstrate your skills in the field. If this applies to you, please post your results of the NLP 100 Exercise to a GitHub repository so that we can review them.

Where to send it

Applications and inquiries must be sent to .

Please note that we will not respond to any inquiry that (1) is not sent to this address, or (2) does not meet the requirements described above.
